Liner notes from Juke Joint Johnny

When it comes to making records, Tom Forsell is a man after my own heart. Hire a studio, prime the band, then let the producer do the work! It sounds easy, but months of planning, writing and rehearsing go into the making of any record, and this one is no exception.

The Moonee Valley Drifters have been working hard this last year, and it shows. Guided by the expertise of producer James Black, the band recorded this album in just two nights!

Some nice cajun and tex-mex feels make this album different from their first and there are several great original songs by Tom Forsell here which slot right into the band's rockin' country roots.

Having Rick Dempster in the line up for this recording is a real bonus. He's a master of the lap-steel and harmonica and his vocal harmonies with Tom are magic. Dempster's original tune "Shuffelin' the Reeds" is a beauty.

Another pleasant surprise is the smooth voice of guitarist Brendan Shearson on "Guitar Rag". Listen also, for the sound of the accordion on two tracks, played by Forsell in the traditional South-of-the-Border way.

Bass player Paul Pyle is someone I've been fortunate in working with on many occasions and in my opinion he is one of the finest in Australia.

Swinging Ed Colbourne on drums compliments Pyle perfectly and whatever styles they play on this album, the feel is always great.

I've worn out two copies of the Moonee Valley Drifters first LP "Boogie Woogie Fever" at home, at 3CR and 3RRR and I can tell you that their new one "Juke Joint Johnny" is destined for a similar fate!
